Jakub Berdych Karpelis

Graduated from the Technical Art School of Stonework and Sculpture (Střední průmyslová škola kamenická a sochařská) in Hořice, the Czech Republic, 1989–1990. After his graduation, he started to cooperate with Olbram Zoubek. In 2002, together with Maxim Velčovský, he co-founded the Qubus Design Studio, Prague, the Czech Republic, which is primarily focused on design and conceptual work in traditional materials such as glass and porcelain. Since 2014 he has been leading the course at the Studio of Object and Glass at the Scholastika Post-Secondary Technical School of Visual Communications, Prague.

He has exhibited his works in the Czech Republic, Austria, China, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, the UK, and the USA. He has participated in several solo and many group exhibitions, both national and international, including: Designblok, Prague, 2002–2015; Maison & Object, Paris, France, 2006–2012; EXPO, Shanghai, China, 2010; Moss Bureau, New York, NY, USA, 2010; Shanghai Museum of Glass, Shanghai, 2012; Mint Gallery, London, UK, 2012; Galerie Kuzebauch, Prague, 2014–2015.

His works are represented in numerous museums and private collections, including: the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague; Die Neue Sammlung, Munich, Germany.

In addition to the conceptual and product design, Berdych is focused on implementations in the field of interior architecture and fine arts, for instance: the interior reconstruction of the St. Bartholomew church in Chodovice, the Czech Republic.

Berdych’s fine art and design are playful and ironic. He prefers to combine noble materials, such as glass, with artificial ones, like plastic.
